San Diego’s Evolving Landscape: Defense, Military and Land Use in a Changing World
San Diego anchors one of the most powerful and diverse military ecosystems in the Pacific. From fleet sustainment and naval aviation to special operations, and defense industrial capacity, all converging within one of the most constrained land use environments in the country.
Program description:
San Diego is a cornerstone of America’s Pacific defense posture, hosting a uniquely dense mix of military capabilities: major fleet concentrations, naval aviation, special operations forces, training facilities, command and control/intelligence hubs, logistics nodes, and ship repair and modernization capacity. These activities rely on scarce waterfront, industrial, and mission support land, all creating pressures and constraints that shape regional planning in ways few metropolitan areas experience.
This LAI program brings together experts who operate across the spectrum of mission readiness, industrial sustainment, and regional growth. Panelists will explore how modernization cycles, compatible use challenges, workforce demands, and redevelopment forces intersect with the region’s strategic role in the Indo Pacific.
